But if you get up early...

... and climb to the abbey to be there as soon as you can after it opens (9.30 at this time of year), there are plenty of others, but not so many that you can't move or breathe, and there's that kind of relaxed, quietly joyous and self-satisfied fellow-feeling that you get among people who've beaten the rush.

And you're up there with the birds,

and the angels.

(There's a bird or birds in every picture there isn't an angel in...)

Thank you for the corners and niches.

Ever since watching the German film Himmel über Berlin, I can't help but see angels as slightly heaven-weary beings who wear trenchcoats, are colorblind, and take an intense interest in higher learning. The birds must be the messengers of the messengers.

I've just finished editing a biography in which someone reveals one of the essentials of good photography: early morning light; apparently it's horizontal whereas by midday it's vertical and uninteresting. One of several reasons why I'm doomed to be a mere wordspinner (But you can do that well, too. No fair)

Beautiful and serene. Rush me there now!

Birds, even in the distance, help an understanding of the structure of the building. And perhaps vice versa. The contrast of solid, ancient stone and lightness and feathers does the trick. I suppose the same goes for angels and stone.

Splendid photographs - no doubt recording a splendid time. Excellent.

I do love this early morning light, so pale and calm. What uplifting pictures! (Not meaning to be punnish, but aware of its possibilities)

If you had a "familiar," I think that it would be a bird.

Very satisfying mix of gravity and lightness...
